The state of Alaska requires a general permit for oil drilling, fracking, and gas extraction in order to minimize pollution and protect water quality. There are limits on permitted extraction areas, as well as where waste can be discharged. The Environmental Protection Agency providesresourcesfor oil and gas extraction facilities to better understand the permit conditions.

Alaska’s Oil and Gas Extraction Restrictions

Oil Rig Equipment Supplier in Alaska

The EPA’s permit covers facilities located in Cook Inlet, with boundaries extending from Chinitna Point to Cape Douglas to Shuyak Island and ending at Port Chatham. Any oil and gas operations existing within this jurisdiction are required to notify the government and comply with regulations.

Within regulated areas, only specific discharges are allowed. These must come drilling fluids and drill cuttings, deck drainage, sanitary wastes, fire control system test water, and other similar waste streams. If operations are strictly exploratory and done to determine the nature of a potential reserve, usually through drilling, then the permit does not authorize them to discharge produced water.

Within the previously mentioned areas, there are prohibited spots where waste discharges are not allowed. These include:

  • Waters less than 10 meters in depth
  • Kamishak Bay
  • Shelik Strait
  • 20 nautical miles around Sugarloaf Island

The Natural Gas Extraction Application Process

In order to participate in oil drilling, fracking, or gas extraction, operators must first submit a Notice of Intent (NOI). This provides the government with:

  • Your contact information
  • Where you will be discharging waste
  • When you will begin operations
  • Environmental support
  • Oil Well information
  • Types and estimated amounts of waste
  • Line drawings of waste stream flows

To submit an application, visit theAlaska Department of Natural Resources.

Oil Drilling and Gas Extraction Processes

There are several techniques involved in natural gas extraction and oil drilling. Each of these techniques are one part of the larger extraction process. The common steps of the gas extraction process are:

  • Preparing the oil drilling rig and the drilling site
  • Oil drilling
  • Cementing the oil well casing and performing tests
  • Completing the Oil well
  • Hydraulic Fracturing, or Fracking
  • Recycling fluid from fracking
  • Restoring the land
